On World Diabetes Day 2025, the Somaliland Volunteer Doctors, based in Hargeisa, organized a vital public gathering aimed at raising awareness about diabetes and providing essential healthcare services to the community. The event attracted a large audience and received support from high-ranking officials within the Ministry of Health Development, including the director of the Directorate of Public Health.

𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝘿𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙎𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜
✅ Participants benefited from complimentary screenings for diabetes and related complications, along with blood pressure checks.
𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝘿𝙞𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙙,
✅ 350 attendees were provided with essential diabetes diagnostic tools, such as blood glucose monitoring systems, strips, and lancets, free of charge.

✅ Informative health education and sensitization sessions were conducted to enhance community knowledge about diabetes management and prevention strategies.

✅ Fresh fruits and healthy snacks were offered to all participants, promoting nutritional awareness, particularly among the diabetic community.

✅ Transportation was organized to facilitate participants' travel to and from the event venue, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all attendees.

The event culminated in several actionable points aimed at enhancing diabetes care and raising community awareness:

After preliminary screenings revealed that nearly 90% of participants had uncontrolled sugar levels despite treatment, the Somaliland Volunteer Doctors Association pledged to initiate community awareness and health education programs around diabetes before the first quarter of 2025.
✍️ 𝙋𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨
In collaboration with Somali MMTV, a major television station based in Hargeisa, the SLVA plans to host public discussions and open dialogues focused on diabetes care for Somali-speaking communities throughout the Horn of Africa within the week.

The organization aims to continue and expand similar health initiatives to other cities and remote villages in the future, ensuring broad access to diabetes education and care.
